Taking full advantage of his confectioner’s background, Hirshfield personally blended, cooked, and peddled a variety of products, including an individually wrapped, oblong, chewy, chocolate candies that quickly became a customer favorite. Sold at a penny apiece and affectionately named after Hirshfield’s five-year old daughter, Clara, whose nickname was “Tootsie,” Tootsie Rolls propelled Hirshfield’s modest corner store into a burgeoning enterprise that has evolved in little more than a century into the multinational corporation, Tootsie Roll Industries.

A single contains about 26 calories and weighs 6.63 grams; a single serving of Tootsie Rolls (6 pieces) contains about 155 calories. Video/Commercials: The Tootsie web site has a good selection of vintage commercials and video clips. Groovy stuff. One gets the impression that their advertising has not changed much in the past few decades.
