From Forbes: “The nation’s largest traditional grocery chain, Cincinnati-based Kroger has seen sales growth during the recession as households cut down on restaurant spending and eat more meals at home.
The company has said sales are strong for its own corporate brands, which Kroger offers in three tiers: the premium “Private Selection” that the company says has $1 billion in annual sales, store name brands and a low-priced “Value” brand.
Kroger has been expanding its brands and promotions targeting regular customers such as special coupons.”

“Coupon use typically rises as the economy slows, said Matthew Tilley, director of marketing for Winston-Salem, N.C.-based CMS, a coupon-processing agent for grocery brands.
The last boom in coupon use was during the tough economic times of the early 1990s, Tilley said.
