From Forbes: “The nation’s largest traditional grocery chain, Cincinnati-based has seen sales growth during the recession as households cut down on restaurant spending and eat more meals at home.

The company has said sales are strong for its own corporate brands, which Kroger offers in three tiers: the premium “Private Selection” that the company says has $1 billion in annual sales, store name brands and a low-priced “Value” brand.

Kroger has been expanding its brands and promotions targeting regular customers such as special coupons.”

From PRWeb: “A recent poll by Select Coupon Program found that 78% of US Consumers are using more as a result of the recent economic downturn with 61% reporting that they are using more coupons than at any other time in their life.

During the recent survey, 21% of respondents cited increased energy costs as the number one reason for the increase and Job loss at a close second with 20%.

Other reasons reported for the increase included stock market declines, home foreclosure and retirement.

“This is a huge finding”, says Susan Samtur, a leading expert and Author of the best selling book “Cashing in at the Checkout”, “it proves that Americans are taking food savings very seriously during this recession. The good news is that coupons provide significant savings on food and other grocery products, which is exactly what Americans need right now”.

A report by Consumer Reports stated that an average household can save up to $678 per year on food when using grocery coupons. These savings can go a long way for the average US Consumer and with unemployment at a 15 year high it is no wonder that grocery coupon usage has spiked.”

From the Columbia Daily Tribune: “Mendoza hits three or four stores a week – from Wal-Mart to to Walgreens – trolling for sales. She knows the latest buy-one, get-one deals at supermarkets and extra-bucks items at CVS. She considers it a good day when she saves at least 90 percent off the total bill. Take a recent trip to Kmart. Her purchases rang up to $319, but after sales and coupons, which Kmart doubled last week, she paid $18, which included taxes.

Mendoza’s strategy centers on finding the lowest price for an item and coupling it with a high-value coupon. She pays attention to BOGO deals because most stores let you use two coupons, even though you are paying for one item. She loads up on trial sizes, which often accept coupons. (Watch for coupons that exclude trial sizes.) Every Sunday, she buys 15 to 20 newspapers for the coupon inserts.”
